Why Do Photos Get Locked?

Sometimes it might happen that a lock symbol appears on thumbnail of the photos and thus making files inaccessible. For example, when user tries to open an image file for editing, they will not be able to do so. Further, when attempted to delete, rename or move this picture file, a warning notification may pop-up stating:

“You don’t currently have permission to access this folder/file. Click Continue to permanently get access to this folder”

Hence when user gets ahead and clicks on Continue option, they will be taken through sequence of procedures to unlock the photo file. But sometimes this option may not unlock the picture successfully.

So when end users encounter such situations, they get puzzled as they will no longer be able to access their locked image files. Why Photos get locked?

Most of the times, this problem arise due to conflicts in user permission. Also, when user tries to access an image file that being used by another program (or a process), this file may get locked as its already in use. Hence this source file needs to be closed completely by all processes in order to get unlocked. It’s not a complicated issue as it is possible unlock photos easily using below approach.

How to unlock photo file?

Right click on the photo file and click on “Properties”->Go to the tab “Security” ->Select on the “Advanced” button at the bottom  ->Click on “Change Permission”   ->Select your user account and check the option “Include inheritable permissions from this object’s parent” -> Click on apply to remove the lock icon.

After removing the lock if you find out that some of your important photos are missing from the folder holding your crucial pictures, then you can use the next approach to get them back
